Some of the symptoms of allergies and intolerances are the same or similar, but the differences between the two are very important.
Test Pets only tests for “intolerances”, which represent the majority of reactions. An intolerance is a response that does not take place in the immune system and onset may be anywhere from 30 minutes up to 48 hours after ingestion or exposure. While intolerances may cause reactions ranging from a mild skin rash to severe abdominal discomfort, they are not normally life-threatening.
A true allergy is an immune system response. It is caused by the body mistaking a food or item as a harmful substance and releasing antibodies to fight it. The adverse reaction is usually rapid and can be life-threatening. Test Pets does NOT test for this type of reaction [IgE allergies], which represents only 2% of all allergic/intolerance reactions.
The best way to prevent reactions to intolerances is to identify and eliminate foods and substances that trigger them. Our tests provide you with a comprehensive analysis of the items your pet reacts to.
- Hair testing provides the most reliable results for at-home collection.
- Collecting a hair sample is easy and non-invasive – No pricks, no prods, no pain! Our tests require only 10-15 strands of hair.
- Hair testing eliminates storage, transportation and usability constraints that are associated with other types of tissue samples.
- Faster Results – Hair testing is completed quickly and efficiently with results reported within 5-7 days after the sample arrives at the lab.
- Affordable Cost – Hair testing is less expensive than other methods. This allows us to test more items than any other test currently on the market and pass the savings along to the customer.
- Hair is stable. It’s not affected by factors such as recent meals, stress, medications, etc.
Our tests require 10-15 individual hairs. There are a few ways to collect the pet hair/fur: Using a brush or comb, pull a few hairs using your fingers or tweezers, or shave a small area as close to the skin as possible (without injuring your pet).
Results will be emailed to you at the address specified on your submission form as soon as they have been verified by our lab technicians. Test results are summarized on an easy-to-understand PDF document.
Your pet’s test results will include all items which have shown an intolerance of 85% or more. Symptoms do not occur below this threshold so we do not store or provide any data that falls below 85%.
We can not control how long the postal service will take to send us the hair sample. However, once we do receive the hair sample, you will receive an email to let you know that the hair sample has been received at the processing center.
We recommend sending your sample by certified mail or with signature on delivery so it can be tracked during transit.
If it has been over 2 weeks since you mailed in your sample, please contact our customer service department for further instructions.
While we use an 85% threshold level to help reduce false positives it is difficult to determine what is considered common for a pet since everyone is unique.
Try not to be overwhelmed about the length of the report received. Focus on the specific items that you know that your pet eats. Start with those items and eliminate them from their daily nutrition plan.
The pet hair sample does not need to use long hair. We can complete the test using 5-10 strands of hair 1-inch or longer. If your pet’s hair is less than 1-inch long include 10-15 strands in the sample bag.
With intolerance testing, your pet doesn’t have to ingest or be exposed to the item for it to register as an intolerance. Our method of testing utilizes Bioresonance technology to scan hair samples to determine energetic imbalances between your pet and the items being tested. The testing identifies intolerances which may cause varying degrees of symptoms if currently being ingested or exposed to, or would be in the future.
No. One reason we utilize hair samples for our testing is that it is not affected by medication, either applied or ingested. You may continue with any medication you give your pet without affecting the testing results.

Our testing equipment is managed in accordance with EN ISO 13485: 2003 + AC: 2007 by a certified manufacturer of medical products. The MARS III is approved as a medical device class IIa in accordance with Directive 93/42/EEC.
An animal’s body is constantly changing so intolerances may be changing as well. A negative result today may not necessarily mean that a food or substance will not create issues in their body in the future. And, what may be a trigger today may become normalized.
Intolerances can be better understood and overcome through processes including elimination, detoxification, improving gut health, improving overall health, reintroduction, etc.
Since no two pets respond to intolerances or treatments in the same way, periodic re-testing can help keep your pet on track during their healing process. Re-testing may be beneficial after 90 days. Ask your veterinarian to guide you.
We have heard from some of our customers that their pet insurance has reimbursed them for their pet test so it’s worth asking. We strive to keep the cost of testing as low as possible so that we can offer all pets the chance to live a happy and healthy life..
